(1907 – 1943) Luftwaffe ground-attack pilot who commanded a wing (StG 2) of Stuka aircraft. He was a recipient of the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. Kupfer flew 636 combat missions and was shot down three times, all by ground fire. Killed when his Heinkel He 111 crashed returning to his base in bad weather. Rare war-date S.P., 4" x 5 1/2" news photo signed in blue ink. Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope, apparently addressed by Kupfer and bearing a Feldpost stamp and July 31, 1943 cancel. Very light vertical fold, else fine.
