Large lot of approx. 135 official Marine Corps photographs taken during World War II, most with captions printed on the verso. The 8" x 10" photos largely cover the Marines in action at Midway, Saipan and Tarawa, with other images from Cape Gloucester, Renova, Kwajalein, Tulagi, and Eniwetok, officers, funerals, etc. Some 23 photos bear no markings on the verso, and these tend to show dead or wounded Americans, cemeteries, overcrowded beaches, soldiers using prisoners for labor, and so on and thus were likely never approved for publication. Images include the decimation of the airfield and base at Midway, soldiers on patrol and under fire at the front, landing operations, shattered Japanese bunkers and pillboxes with heaps of dead Japanese appearing in many of the photos, wrecked and burning landing craft, medics at work, Japanese POWs, and so on. The photos bear three punch holes near one long side, else overall near fine condition. A comprehensive view of these earlier blood-soaked battles.
