Very rare pair of wood signs from S.H.A.E.F. Headquarters obtained by a "Monuments Man" stationed at the headquarters during World War II. The group includes one 10" x 3 1/2" sign bearing hand-painted gold Gothic letters "SHAEF". The second sign, shield-shaped and 12" x 12", displays a large decal of the SHAEF emblem. This sign, with eyelets at top, was originally suspended beneath the smaller "SHAEF" sign. These signs were obtained by Major John W. Bailey, a "Monuments Man" who received high esteem from the Dutch government for his recovery of crucial zoological collections stolen by the Germans during the occupation of the Netherlands, and also for his "aiding in the liberation and hospitalization of Netherlands nations from Labour and Concentration Camps..." A substantial amount of reference information concerning Bailey is included, as are two of his ribbons and three pieces of collar insignia.
