(1893 – 1971) German general in the Wehrmacht who commanded the 17th Infantry Division and a recipient of the Knight's Cross. The 17.Infanterie-Division took part in the occupation of Austria, and in January, 1945, it was nearly totally destroyed in the Weichsel bend, while remnants survived in the Neumarkt-Breslau pocket. It was reformed in March 1945 in Schlesien, fighting on briefly until the end in May of 1945 when it surrendered. Partly-printed D.S., 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], 24, 1943, an award of the Iron Cross, 2nd Class to Leutnant Christian Dorr of 9/Gren. Rgt. 21. Sold with: a T.L.S. from an officer on Grenadier Regiment 21 letterhead to Dorr's father, 2pp. 4to., "In the East", Nov. 21, 1943, advising the man that his son had died of injuries at the field hospital in Lemberg: "...we have lost another active officer...a good comrade...when he received his mortal wound, he was in the battle of Kuibyschewo, far from his regiment with a different troop..."; with a typed death notice ("Sterbeurkunde"), 1p. 8vo., Aug. 10, 1944; and a pre-printed notice of death from OKW headquarters. Very good.
