(1889 – 1978) American major general who commanded the 5th Armored Division during World War II. Fine association war-date T.L.S. as commander of the Fifth Armored Division, 1p. 4to., Jan. 31, 1945 to CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972), American major general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in its assault on Omaha Beach, in the drive across France, at the Hurtgen Forest and in the battle of Aachen. As the 5th is attached to another corps, Oliver sends thanks. He promises to have Huebner’s letter read to members of the division, as it “will inspire every man in the division to increased efforts”. He adds: “…we have felt ourselves to be a permanent part of the Corps, and we leave with regret. We shall watch the achievements of V Corps with a feeling of pride, and of regret that we are no longer participants…” Fine.
