(1887 - 1976) British Field Marshall who commenced the drive at El Alamein that ultimately drove Rommel from North Africa. Also involved in the invasions of Sicily and France. Fine content and association war-date A.L.S. “B. L. Montgomery General C-in-C 21 Army Group”, 2pp. 8vo. On official letterhead, [England], Jan. 16, 1944 to CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972), American major general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in its assault on Omaha Beach, in the drive across France, at the Hurtgen Forest and in the battle of Aachen. Montgomery praises the 1st, which is in training for the impending invasion of France. In part: “…I would like to tell you how much I enjoyed my visit to your Division today and how greatly impressed I was by the soldierly bearing and obvious efficiency of the officers and men. The Division has already won renown in battle in Africa and Sicily; I have absolute confidence that it will do even better in future engagements with the enemy. Please tell all your officers and men how glad I am that such a fine division is to serve under my command…” Fine.
