(1896–1987) American major general, served in both the Pacific and European Theaters. Collins commanded the VII Corps in the Allied invasion of Normandy and on the Western Front through to the end of World War II in Europe. Fine content and association T.L.S. "Joe" on Army Chief of Staff letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Washington, July 5, 1949 to CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972), American major general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in its assault on Omaha Beach, in the drive across France, at the Hurtgen Forest and in the battle of Aachen. In part: "...I am sorry I cannot give you anything definite as to who will go over to Germany...the Chief has not changed his plan to send a four-star man...there was no question in General Bradley's mind of your competence or your qualifications for the job...My. suggestion...[is] that you remain on as the Army commander at least until the conclusion of the Berlin airlift..." Collins also discusses the propriety of Huebner accepting an award from the Vatican. Very good.
