CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972), American major general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in its assault on Omaha Beach, in the drive across France, at the Hurtgen Forest and in the battle of Aachen. Fine association lot of five letters sent to Huebner while by prominent American generals and other military officers while Huebner served as Deputy Commander in Chief U.S. European Command. Includes: Lt. Gen. THOMAS T. HANDY (1892-1982), Deputy Chief of Staff, U.S. Army who transmitted the order to bomb Hiroshima, T.L.S. "Tom", 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], Jan. 16, 1948, comments on Huebner's article on "Leadership"; Major Gen. STANHOPE B. MASON (1904-1980), Huebner's Chief of Staff in the 1st Division and 5th Corps, A.L.S. "Stan" on War College letterhead, 5pp. 4to., May 31, 1948, discusses a 1st Division history, "General Schwerin" and army news; Lt. Gen. ALVAN C. GILLEM, JR. (1888-1973), commander of the XIII Corps, 9th US Army, T.L.S. "Van" on Third Army letterhead, Fort McPherson, June 4, 1948, sends thanks for hospitality during visit; Col. TRUMAN SMITH (1893–1970), Army infantry officer, military attache, and intelligence officer who collected valuable intelligence on German military capabilities while serving in Berlin before World War II. During the war, he was a personal adviser to George C. Marshall, A.L.S. "Truman", 2pp. 4to., Fairfield, Ct., May 12 (1948): "...strong a man as Forrestal is, he seems powerless to prevent the vicious inter service struggle now in progress... and discussing various potential vice presidential candidates; and Major Gen. WILLIAM G. WYMAN (1898-1969) Deputy Chief of Staff of the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations, Deputy Chief of Staff Allied Forces Headquarters, commander of the 71st Infantry Division, T.L.S. "Bill" on First Army letterhead, 1p. 4to., New York, Oct. 7, 1948, letter of introduction for a rector with "a wonderful gun collection". With carbons of associated letters from Huebner as well. File holes else fine.
