CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972), American major general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in its assault on Omaha Beach, in the drive across France, at the Hurtgen Forest and in the battle of Aachen. Fine association lot of five letters sent to Huebner by prominent American generals and other military officers while Huebner served as Deputy Commander in Chief U.S. European Command. Includes: Maj. Gen. LYMAN LEMNITZER (1899-1988), American general assigned to Eisenhower's staff, helped form the plans for the invasions of North Africa and Sicily and negotiated the Italian and German surrenders, T.L.S. "Lem" on National War College letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Washington, June 30, 1949, sends a report on the War College; Brig. Gen. BARNWELL R. LEGGE (1881-1949), Military Attaché to Switzerland at the US Embassy in Zurich credited with saving many American airmen, A.L.S. "Barnie" on his letterhead, 1p. 4to., Apr. 19 (1948), concerns his mother's passing; Maj. Gen. CLAYTON BISSELL (1896-1973), commander of all American Air Forces in India, Burma and China. When the 14th Air Force was activated, he continued in command of the 10th Air Force in India and Burma, T.L.S. "Clayton" on as London Military Attache, 1p. 4to., July 19, 1948, thanks for courtesies during a visit; Maj. Gen. RALPH C. SMITH (1893–1998), commanded the 27th Infantry Division in combat in the Pacific, A.L.S. "Ralph" on business letterhead, 4pp. 4to., San Francisco, Dec. 11, 1948, largely friendly content discussing Palo Alto, mutual military friends, and the "Mad Marine's article in the Post", likely referring to "Holland 'Howling Mad' Smith" who had fired him; and Maj. Gen. JOHN W. LEONARD (1890-1974), commander of the 9th Armored Division; A.L.S. "John" as commandant on Armored School letterhead, 2pp. 4to., May 11, 1948 giving travel information of a friend and adding: "I am sorry that I am not going to serve under you..." With related carbons of Huebner's letters as well. Marginal file holes, else fine.
