CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972), American major general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in its assault on Omaha Beach, in the drive across France, at the Hurtgen Forest and in the battle of Aachen. Fine association lot of five letters sent to Huebner by prominent American generals and other military officers while Huebner served as Deputy Commander in Chief U.S. European Command. Includes: Brig. Gen. TRUMAN C. THORSON (1895-1966) Assistant Chief of Staff, II Corps and VII Army, T.L.S. "Tubby" on 1st Army letterhead, 1p. 4to., New York, May 6, 1947, mentions 1st Army veteran officers and their replacements; Majoor Gen. WILLIAM G. WEAVER (1988-1970), commander of the 8th Infantry Division. He held that position he held until February 1945 when he was wounded and had to be medically evacuated from the unit, A.L.S. "Bill Weaver" on hotel letterhead, 2pp. 8vo., San Francisco, July 15, 1947, obscurely referring to his son's engagement to a German girl and apparently relieved that things are going better; Maj. Gen. RALPH C. SMITH (1893-1998), commanding general of the 27th Infantry Division at Saipan in 1944. During the campaign, he was replaced on orders from Lt. Gen. Holland M. "Howlin' Mad" Smith, T.L.S. "Ralph" on "Mission C.A.R.E." letterhead, 1p. 4to., Paris, June 17, 1947, makes plans to visit; Lt. Gen. ALBERT C. WEDEMEYER (1897-1989) American general who succeeded Stilwell as Chiang Kai Shek's Chief of Staff and Commander of American forces in China; T.L.S. "Al" on Army General Staff letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Nov. 22, 1947, discusses his duties on the General Staff; and Maj. Gen. JAMES A. VAN FLEET (1892-1992) American four-star general, landed on the beaches at Normandy and led troops across the Cotentin Peninsula, at the Bulge and at Remagen, T.L.S. "Van" on First Army letterhead, 1p. 4to., New York, Nov. 13, 1947, gives his travel information. With related carbons of Huebner's letters as well. Marginal file holes, else fine.
