(1898 – 1967) British military officer, led one of the last cavalry actions in the First World War. During the Second World War, he was chief of staff to Field Marshal Harold Alexander at El Alamein, and later commanded the British Eighth Army. Fine content partial A.L.S. "Dick McCreery", 2pp. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.]. He recounts action on the front at the Somme, in part: "...we had very few tanks left when the German advance from the Somme started...no arty support to speak of...the Germans had a very strong a[nti] t[an]k defense defense for their bridgehead west of the Somme...We were amazed by the French infantry...No plan of any sort, and we never saw a Frenchman digging...the climax came when the French streamed back across the Seine and not a single French soldier stopped to hold the left bank!..."
