(1891-1954) U.S. Navy admiral who commanded the battleship USS SOUTH DAKOTA during the Guadalcanal Campaign, and later became Judge Advocate General of the U.S. Navy. Fine I.S.P. "T.L. Gatch", 8" x 10" b/w, a vintage image of the South Dakota at anchor, bearing a 'Press Association, Inc." backstamp. Gatch signs in black ink near the top of the image, adding his rank "Captain US Navy Commanding", and a lengthy inscription, in full: "The South Dakota is the greatest [battleship] in the world, including the much-vaunted General Tirpitz. Oct 26, 1942 in Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, South Pacific, downed 32 attacking Japanese planes. Nov. 15, 194s off Savo Island in the Solomons bagged 3 Japanese cruisers, sank them all, we believe." Shows a bump to the top right corner and some wear to the verso, else very good.
(USS SOUTH DAKOTA) THOMAS L. GATCH
