(1880-1959) American general and statesman, Roosevelt's Army Chief of Staff during World War II and author of the Marshall Plan which sustained eastern Europe after the war. Fine content T.L.S. on official War Department Chief of Staff letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Washington, Dec. 18, 1939 to Co. John B. Brooks of the Army Air Corps Primary Flying School at Randolph Field, Tx. Marshall first offers holiday greetings and thanks to Brooks and his personnel for their support “during these critical months”, referring to Marshall becoming chief of staff and dealing with the German invasion of Poland. He continues: “…The [past year has been epochal in the peacetime history of the Army…a major augmentation for the Air Corps…[and] reinforcement of both the commands in Panama and Puerto Rico…the wholehearted response of all ranks to every demand has been an inspiration and profound gratification to the War Department…” Fine condition. Brooks was one of the original 34 members of the First Aero Squadron, commanded two training bases, and led the final air raid of the war, on the Kurile Islands.
