Elaborate and attractive memorial certificate, 11" x 15" (sight), dedicated to Union Lieutenant-Colonel Waldo Merriam of the 16th Massachusetts Volunteers. The certificate feature an inset hand-tinted carte de visite photograph of Merriman in uniform with his saber at top, beneath a display of American flags and the title: "A Tribute to the Memory of the Fallen Brave". A hand-written dedication at center reads: "Lieut. Col. Merriam 16 - Mass Vols - Killed in Battle of Spotsylvania Va. May 13[?], 1863 Aged 24 years". The dedication is surrounded by a hand-colored lithograph border depicting patriotic motifs and notable battles of the war, with a publishing line at the bottom edge indicating that it was printed by the lithography company of J.H. Bufford in Boston. Matted in gray and mounted in a period wood frame with gilt embellishments. The certificate itself shows notable soiling, damps stains and a few tears, with the central dedication faded, and the frame showing some chips, else very good.
