Original salt-print photograph, 6" x 8" sepia, a circa 1860 view of the Mexican War Midshipmen's Monument on the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. The monument is flanked by two captured Spanish cannons, with three cadets visible at the edges of the frame. The photo is mounted on an 8" x 10 1/2" backing, bearing the blind-embossed mark of Baltimore photographers "Fischer & Bros." beneath the image. Bears indistinct pencil inscriptions to the verso, with some spots of soiling to the edges of the mount, else very good. The Mexican War Midshipmen's Monument was erected in 1848 to commemorate four U.S. Navy midshipmen who lost their lives during the Mexican-American War.
