(1918 - 2013) South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was South Africa's first black chief executive, and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid. Fine, limited edition set of five lithographs reproducing illustrations executed by Mandela, each 8vo., entitled "The Struggle Series". The images are accompanied by a lithograph written introduction, signed boldly by Mandela in pencil at bottom right. The set is further prefaced by a card giving the title of the series and the publication date in 2001, signed by publisher Ross McLean Calder in pencil. Each of the seven cards in the set bears the pencil limitation "35/950", and it is housed in its original archival box. In fine condition. An edition of this set realized $5,000 at auction in May of 2018.
