Fine historic newspaper, the December 30, 1799 edition of the "Connecticut Courant", 4pp. folio, bearing several letters and articles describing the death of President George Washington, his funeral and the honors granted him. The front page reprints a letter announcing the death from Washington's personal secretary, Tobias Lear, as transmitted by his successor as president, John Adams. The page includes additional announcements of Washington's passing to the military and other bodies, as well as Congressional resolutions passed in his honor. The third page further features a detailed description of Washington's funeral procession and burial, including a diagram showing the placement of his pallbearers around his coffin. The margins of each page are trimmed in mourning black. A likely unrelated article has been cut from the third page, resulting in a 2" x 3 1/2" paper loss, with additional small losses to the central fold, chips to the edges, and foxing overall, else very good.
