Small gold-plated watchkey, approx. 1 1/4" x 1/2", as awarded to inductees of the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society as a symbol of membership. The key is engraved with the society's Greek initials on the obverse, with three stars at top left and a pointing finger at bottom right. The reverse bears the engraved initials "SP" ("Societas Philosophiae" or philosophical society), with the date of the society's creation, 'December 5, 1776". Shows a few small spots of black oxidation, else very good. Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest honor society for the liberal arts and sciences in the United States, and has included 17 U.S. Presidents, 37 Supreme Court justices, and 136 Nobel Prize laureates amongst its members.
