(1821-1890) Victorian explorer, writer, and translator who undertook the Hajj to Mecca in disguise, published unexpurgated translation" of "One Thousand and One Nights", the Kama Sutra and "The Perfumed Garden", and became the first documented European to view Lake Tanganyika, among many other accomplishments. Rare A.L.S. "R.F. Burton" on stationery embossed with an Arabic inscription, 1p. 12mo., [n.p., n.d.], to an indistinct correspondent, thanking him for some news and passing along instructions in a minute and cramped hand. He signs at the conclusion in black ink. The letter has been trimmed, with a horizontal split at center repaired with cello tape and mounting traces showing through the paper, mounted in a gilt frame along with a photo portrait. Estimated accordingly.
