Interesting original Reconstruction-era pencil sketch, 8 1/4" x 6 1/2", a rather satirical depiction of a white missionary school teacher addressing a group of prospective African-American students: "I've come among you to solicit your attendance to my school for colored people". The group responds: "Why - we doesn't want to be teached. We's jest formin' a siety to send our gals as missionaries to the poor Abolishionaries at Boston", and "We's been members of Congress from Souf Carolina missus - we's very enlightened already". The sketch shows folds with minor splits, toning, and scattered foxing overall, with an indistinct black ink inscription on the verso, else very good.
