(1707 - 1785) Signer of the Declaration of Independence, ten-time Governor of Rhode Island, and author of the first anti-slavery law in the United States. Manuscript D.S. as Governor of Rhode Island, 1p. 6 1/2" x 3", [Providence], 1757, approves payment of three pounds eighteen shillings for charges listed as: "To [?] the Council of War 18 persons...To lending[?] the Council of War one boy...To cash paid [?] and pepper...". These charges related to French and Indian War expenses. Manuscript text is a bit light, signature is fine and bold. Ex: Kenneth Rendell, ca. 1960-67.
