Revealing letter of one "R. F. Woods" to Territory of Florida Gov. JOHN BRANCH, 1p.4to., Nashville, Oct. 8, 1850. Woods seeks to recover $650 due him on a note given by a relative of Branch, one "Jno. R. Branch". In part: "...a note drawn...on my favor for $650 upon which your name appears as security. You will probably remember the circumstance...It was given by Mr. Branch to redeem the Negro boy John who he had sold to me & who you afterwards took with you to Florida. When the note first fell due, I spoke to Mr. B....he promised me it would immediately be paid...that was the last of it...my pecuniary necessities demand if of me..." Woods also offers to relinquish any interest on the note. Fine. JOHN BRANCH (1782–1863) had also served as U.S. Senator, Secretary of the Navy, the 19th Governor of the state of North Carolina, and here was the sixth and last territorial governor of Florida.
