Fine example of a U.S. military issue Model 1904 “McClellan”-style equestrian saddle, approx. 19” x 14” x 10” (excluding stirrups), constructed from rich dark brown leather with a raised pommel at front and cantle at rear fitted with brass-shielded strap eyelets. The pommel shield is marked “12 In. Seat”, and the front left-hand skirt is marked with the initials “E.H.S. C.B.” The saddle is fitted with two stirrups, one bearing the embossed marking “U S” within an oval, as well as several different incised numerals. The second stirrup is maker marked as being manufactured by the Rock Island Arsenal, and again with the initials “E.H.S.” The saddle also includes an original brown horse-hair cincha, with the one guard for the suspension rings also marked as being made by the Rock Island Arsenal. Shows appropriate wear from age and use, with some cracking to the seat and drying to the straps, and some verdigris to the brass fittings, else very good. Also present are a pair of contemporary leather-covered wood stirrups for a saddle of this style, both bearing the embossed initials “U S” within an oval.
