(1727 - 1820) Signer of the Declaration of Independence. Ellery was a prominent Rhode Island lawyer who represented the state in the Continental Congress and in the proceedings leading the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Partly-printed D.S. signed twice: "William Ellery, Jr." and "William Ellery Collector", 4pp. legal folio, Newport, Sep. 22, 1790, a certification that the brig "Lucy", Thomas Barker Briggs, master, has paid a registration fee for coastwise trading and that the master and owners are American citizens. Ellery engrossed the entire document, signed as a witness and again as collector of customs, or in this case, the registration fee. A bit weak at folds, one on the second page especially, still overall very good.
