Rare mounted albumen photograph "Beef Issue to Indians at Pine Ridge", by John C. Grabill. The 10 5/8" x 8 1/4" photo bears the caption in the plate: "Beef Issue to Indians at Pine Ridge, S.D. First issue after Indian war..." with Grabill's studio name and copyright date of 1891. The image shows several hundred Indians, some on horseback, in a broad line that extends beyond view at left and right. Mounted to a page from a Civil War-date army publication, with a large corner chip at upper-right and some rippling at margins. Worthy of restoration, and estimated accordingly. This photo was taken at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in the immediate aftermath of the Wounded Knee Massacre of Dec. 29, 1890 which, for all intents and purposes, ended the Indian Wars. JOHN C. H. GRABILL (1849-1903) was a prominent western photographer most remembered for his important images of the early Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, the Sioux Indians, and the aftermath of the Wounded Knee Massacre.
