Rare mounted albumen photograph "Indian Council in Hostile Camp" by John C. Grabill. The 8 3/4" x 4 3/4" (irregular) photo bears the caption in the plate: "Indian Council in Hostile Camp. The great council among chiefs and leaders which settled the Indian war..." Grabill's studio name and copyright date of 1891 are also noted. The image shows a group of perhaps fifty seated men, most in blankets or robes and with their heads covered. Teepees are visible at right. This photo was taken at or near the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in the immediate aftermath of the Wounded Knee Massacre of Dec. 29, 1890 which, for all intents and purposes, ended the Indian Wars. Mounted and trimmed, else very good. JOHN C. H. GRABILL (1849-1903) was a prominent western photographer most remembered for his important images of the early Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, the Sioux Indians, and the aftermath of the Wounded Knee Massacre.
