(1783 - 1843) French physician who dedicated himself to the study of yellow fever, determining that it was not a contagious disease. Chervin visited the places where yellow fever predominated, including New Orleans, the Antilles, and Havana, exposing himself to those with the disease and even wearing the clothing of victims of the fever. Fine content L.S., 2pp. 4to., New York, July 12, 1821, one of Chervin’s important letters polling American doctors yellow fever. In part: “… the goodness to state the result of your own experience on the contagious or non-contagious nature of the yellow fever…give in support of your opinion…some of the most striking facts…I would request of you to write two copies of your certificate…” With integral address leaf. Toned band at bottom, else very good. Chervin’s work was groundbreaking – even such eminent physicians as Benjamin Rush believed that the sickness could be passed between those infected.
