WILLIAM ALEXANDER (LORD STIRLING) (1726 - 1783) Revolutionary War General captured at the Battle of Long Island, later served under Washington at Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth. War-date A.L.S. "Sterling MG " 1p. 4to., Saratoga, Nov. 1, 1781 to Major Nicholas Quakenbush, quartermaster at Albany requesting the latter to "immediately send to this place two good large Grindstones" explaining that "we cannot do without them therefore if they are in Albany they must be sent. Remember to send the writing paper &c by this Express if it is not Already sent. The additional tools wrote for Yesterday are also much wanted..." With integral address leaf addressed in Sterling's hand and bearing an additional signature "Sterling ". A few minor tape marks at margins, usual folds, otherwise very good. $600-800
