Description:

ANNE LOUIS HENRI DE LA FARE
(1752-1829) French Roman Catholic cardinal and counter-Revolutionary in Nancy. An émigré, he was one of the most active in the plots to restore the Ancien Regime. Fine content A.D. [unsigned], 3pp. 4to., Vienna Nov. 11, 1794, a master copy of a letter to Jean-Baptiste Antoine de Flachsladen, chancellor of Louis XVIII, regarding the release and exchange of Marie-Therese Charlotte and other political matters. Charlotte, known as ‘Madame Royal' (1778-1851), was the eldest daughter of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette and only member of the royal family to survive the Terror. La Fare makes a plea for the liberation and exchange of Madame Royale who is imprisoned with her father, mother and aunt in their apartment in Paris. In part: ‘…The Prince of Gavre, appointed to fetch Madame Royale, left yesterday with a large following…The Princess must leave France by the Alsace border, and cross the Rhine near Freiburg in Brisgau…direct her march towards the Abbey of St. Blaise sur Constance, by Innsbruck, and arrive in Vienna via Tirot. The route is combined in such a way that Madame will always travel under the dominion of the emperor…Madame will find the imperial family eager to welcome her. They have prepared the best apartment in the palace for her; it was that of the late Emperor Leopold and the Empress…the Princess will be accompanied by the Marquise of Tourzel, and two of her daughters, and the Duchess of Charost and her youngest daughter so fortunately rescued from the assassins...'. La Fare is pleased to see that the Princess will be treated with all possible respect and honor and that her presence will ‘…revive the Court…'. Madame should have significant income consisting mainly of ‘…[Marie Antoinette's] dowry…as well as diamonds…'. La Fare then sets forth the results of his investigation of the contents of the ‘Treaty of Triple Alliance' between Russia, England and Austria: ‘…The Alliance…is defensive in all cases of invasion or foreign aggression, but only offensive against France. It stipulates the next campaign against the republic. Russia will furnish the Emperor a contingent of 30,000 men, with 24,000 infantry and 6,000 cavalry. England will have to pay an equivalent subsidy. The three powers engage not to make a partial peace, but to act in concert in everything and for the greatest good of the coalition…Regarding the affairs of France, the secret is so well guarded that has been impossible for me to discover anything. I imagine that S.M. [His Majesty] must be instructed by Russia herself…Be that as it may, the Triple Alliance presents a new political face…Military operations have been very successful, and the position of the three powers is very advantageous…In these circumstances, and especially if the Vendee could adopt a more threatening attitude, it would perhaps be permissible to think about an occasion…of a legitimate succession of S.M. to the throne of the Bourbons…So far the intentions of the Court remain hidden…'. Imprisoned in her apartment on July 3, 1794 with her father, mother and aunt Madame Elisabeth, Madame was liberated on December 18, 1795 and exchanged for prominent French prisoners. The following year she married Louis-Antoine, Duc d'Angouleme. Very good condition, and worthy of further research. Together with a partial A.L. [unsigned], 2pp. 8vo., Paris, Jan. 27, 1816, to a lady regarding a commemoration of the death of Louis XVI in St. Denis and all churches in France, with lectures, etc. Two pieces.
