Description:

Rare typed D.S., 1p. 4to., Warsaw, Nov. 9, 1939, an award certificate for the Cross of Valour of the Bulak-Balachowicza Army, awarded to Captain Donald Sherman of the 7th Legions' Infantry Regiment, signed at the bottom by an unidentified individual. The bottom bears the typed identification number: "153L". Framed to a total size of 8.75 x 11.75 in. Fine. STANISLAW BULAK-BALACHOWICZ (1883 - 1940) was a notable general, military commander and veteran of World War I, the Russian Civil War, the Estonian War of Independence, the Polish-Bolshevik War and the Invasion of Poland at the start of World War II. During the Polish Defensive War of 1939, Bulak-Balachowicz volunteered for the Polish army, creating a volunteer group of 1750 ill-equipped infantrymen and 250 cavalrymen to help defend Warsaw. After the capitulation of Warsaw, the formally retired general evaded German capture, while organizing the "Konfederacja Wojskowa" ("Military Confederation"), one of the first underground resistance groups in German and Soviet-occupied Poland. In early 1940, the Gestapo found out his whereabouts; according to the most common version, Bulak-Balachowicz was shot by Gestapo agents on 10 May 1940, in the Warsaw center.
