Description:

BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG REPORTED IN THE DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER Rare, important content Confederate newspaper, the Daily Richmond Examiner, Richmond, July 6, 1863, 2pp. folio, setting forth a rather sketchy and understandably skewed account of the battle of Gettsyburg which had culminated in the devastating "PickettCharge" three days earlier. The report occupies virtually the entire second page, and throw an optimistic light upon the Confederate disaster at Gettysburg. With it's own information lacking, the paper depends on Northern accounts of the conflict, yet the headlines declare: "A GREAT BATTLE AT GETTYSBURG - THE FIGHT PROBABLY TO BE RENEWED - DESPERATE AND BLOODY FIGHTING - THE YANKEES CLAIM THE BATTLE AS INDECISIVE - THE BATTLE FIELD HELD BY THE CONFEDERATE - THE FEDERALS SUFFER SEVERELY ". Reporting reads in part: "...'about eight hundred [Confederate prisoners]' are all the authorities of Maryland have received...the Confederate army has punished the enemy...Thursday's fighting...was evidently nothing more than a skirmish...The new Yankee commander exhibited neither talent nor judgment in the plan or execution of the battle... [the Yankees] say their losses are enormous...some [of our cavalry] have showed themselves as near Washington as Silver Spring...". The majority of the report is comprised of excerpts from the Baltimore American, New York Herald and Philadelphia Inquirer, all of which report only on the first two days of the battle. As mentioned above, Examiner's editors go to great length's to find every nugget of positive news within what appears to be otherwise dismal news for the South. Very good condition. $800-1,200
