Description:

A great content war date A.L.S. written by MOSES BRAILEY (1816-1888), colonel of the 38th Ohio, discussing events leading to the Battle of Mill Springs in Kentucky on January 19, 1862. The letter, 4pp. 8vo., Somerset [KY], January 12, 1862, is written to an unknown judge. In part: '...The health of the regiment is not as good as I could wish although it is improving. We are encamped at Somerset 6 miles north of the Cumberland River. [Confederate general] Zollicoffer is on this side of the River about 9 miles from our camp. He is strongly fortified between Fishing Creek, Geese Creek, and the river...He has probably about 12,000 men including 1,200 cavalry...On the 8th had a little brush with the enemy's cavalry. Killed 2, wounded 2, took two prisoners, killed two horses, captured several sabers and some guns, and returned to camp without a casualty on our part...We arrived at camp about dark, wet, cold, tired, and hungry, it raining hard all afternoon...' Lightly toned and creased, a few spots of ink show through. Accompanied by an image of Moses Brailey. One week later the Battle of Mill Springs would begin when Confederate general George Crittenden order his subordinate Felix Zollicoffer to attack a Union camp at nearby Logan Crossroads. The conflict ended with a Union victory although neither side suffered substantial losses. The biggest casualty of the battle would later prove to be George Crittenden's career when he was accused of drunkenness while in command.
