979. BOSTON 'GREAT FIRE' RELIC An unusual partly-printed, 1p. 12mo., Boston, Oct. 28, 1869, a receipt reading, in part: "...received of Jordan Marsh & Co. one package pf currency for redemption, said to contain eight hundred eighty five dollars...". On the verso the receipt is inscribed, in full: "From the U. S. Treasury Building after the fire of Nov. 9, 1872. From the Treasury vaults. E. S. J.". The "Great Boston Fire" started on Nov. 9, 1872 and burned for twenty hours ending the next day. By the time the fire was over nearly 800 building were destroyed, fourteen people including firemen were killed and damages amounted to over 60 million. Left margin is charred with some toning and wear, else very good. $50-75
