Description:

(1857 - 1938) American lawyer who defended Eugene Debs, Leopold and Loeb, and John T. Scopes in the infamous "Monkey Trial". Rare A.L.S. "Clarence Darrow" on his personal letterhead with holograph transmittal envelope, 1p. 4to., Chicago, May 2 [1931], to: "Mr. I. H. Russell Wink Texas P.O. Box 236". At the height of the Depression, Darrow laments he cannot become involved in his friend's proposed venture. In part: "...I don't see anything I could do about the proposition you stated. The slump has hit me pretty hard and I can't speculate. Of course my judgement is of no value in the proposition. I am sending it to Frank Woolfe - who is in Fort Worth. I am sorry you are having hard luck. The whole world seems to be going the same way. I hope fortune may change with you and all of us..." Fine condition, ex: Profiles in History. Frank Woolfe, a fellow defense attorney, also produced the film “From Dusk to Dawn” in which Darrow had a prominent role playing an attorney who defends a union member charged with conspiracy. The film was a commercial success.
