Description:

Large collection of over 100 war-date letters written by Corporal Lewis Hawes of the 460th Bomb Squadron during World War II. Letters written to his parents read in part: ‘...I know that you worry a lot about me and I do not want you to because I caused you enough trouble when I was home and I realize that now and I want you to know that I am sorry...I have been on K.P. today and I sure have eaten...Look about Althea I know you are going to be mad but I just cannot help it but since I left home I know now that I really love her...if you want to do something for me you will have her over...think Manny is coming across, well he may be young but it will make a man out of him anyway. I guess I have got hard-hearted since I got over here, but we cannot win the war in in the States...sure hope this damn war ends soon so I can come home...writing paper is sure scarce over here and if you should be able to send me some I wish that you would...I hate to keep writing and asking for things but it is the only way I can get them so I know you will understand...I have only had nine hours sleep in the last forty-eight...You spoke about my tent, well I have got it fixed up much better now than I did then. It is something like a house now so we are making out fine...You wanted to know how this war is coming, as far as I hear it is coming along swell and can not last much longer according to the latest reports...I suppose that you wonder why I have not made Sergeant, well I will tell you in the near future...Well we had another U.S.O. show today and it was pretty good to have them once in a while, helps to keep up a fellows courage...sure am busy most of the time as we have to keep on flying as that is what I am over here for. I am still a crew chief in my department...I know for a fact that I am considered one of the best men in the department...I am getting sick of staying in this hole, because I do not like these people a bit. A fellow sees things over here that he never thought existed in this world, but they sure do...Boy that Hershey bar sure did hit the spot because we only get one small one a week here...You would not believe it but we have got hot running water showers over here...I do not mind working hard as I know for sure that we are doing some good...I may get transferred...and be a true driver...I will never make any more stripes in this department because he is holding something against me...I should not have spent so much but a fellow has got to have some fun in this damn army...I drove about 350 miles yesterday...I see by the papers that the Germans are getting hell beat out of them...I drove a staff car for three Generals and two Majors and had to stay on the ball all the time...Well we are all expecting the war to be announced over tomorrow and it sure will be a happy day for me and everyone else because I know I will be home for good in six months at the most...' A fine lot worthy of further research.
