51. GEORGE A. CUSTER (1839-1876) Union major general of cavalry who fought in nearly every battle of the Army of the Potomac, including Gettysburg, and later met his tragic end at the hands of Cheyenne and Sioux warriors at the battle of Little Big Horn. War-date signed endorsement cut from a document, 2 1/2" x 2", in full: "Headquarters 3rd Cav. Division November 25th 1864 Respectfully forwarded approved and recommended G A Custer Bvt Maj Genl Comdg". On Oct. 19, 1864 Custer was brevetted major-general of volunteers for gallantry and meritorious services at Winchester and Fisher's Hill. On Sep. 30th he assumed command of the 3d Cavalry, with which he fought the brilliant battle of Woodstock on Oct. 9th, facing former classmate Thomas Rosser. He drove the enemy 26 miles, capturing everything they had on wheels except one gun. At Cedar Creek he confronted the enemy from the first attack in the morning until the battle ended. After this brilliant success Custer was sent to Washington in charge of the captured colors, and recommended for promotion. Fine condition.$3,000 -4,000
