Description:

GEN. ROBERT C. RICHARDSON REPORTS ON PACIFIC BASES
ROBERT C. RICHARDSON, JR. (1882-1954) American Army general, Commanding General of the Hawaiian Department, Military Governor of Hawaii, and commanded all Army personnel in the Pacific Ocean Areas and Mid-Pacific. Fine content compilation: "Reports Submitted to the Chief of Staff by Major General Robert C. Richardson, Jr.", approx. 100pp. 4to., May 27 - July 8, 1942, stamped: "SECRET" and addressed to the Asst. Secretary of War J. J. McCloy. Included is a series of 19 retained copies of telegrams between Richardson, Gen. George Marshall and Gen. Douglas MacArthur concerning Richardson's inspection trip to Australia and the possibility of his establishing a command post there; recommendations for Hawaii, Christmas Island, Canton Island, Australia (noting the resentment of Americans being under the command of Australians), New Caledonia, Efate, and Fiji. Of particular interest is Richardson's assessment of the situation in Australia, and especially the lack of sufficient air power and air crews. He sees Australia as having inadequate self-defense forces especially with the Japanese reinforcement of Guadalcanal. Excellent content! From Robertson's estate.
