Description:

GEORGE VI APPROVES A NAZI APPOINTMENT
(1865 - 1936) King of Great Britain and Ireland through World War II following the abdication of his brother, Edward VIII. Partly-printed D.S. 'George R. I.' as King, 1p. folio, Court of St. James, Sept. 12, 1933, formally approving the appointment by 'Our Good Friend the President of the German Reich' [Paul von Hindenburg] Emil Wiehl as Consul General of the German Reich in Pretoria, South Africa. Folds, else fine. Hitler had swept to power in Germany in January 1933 with the title of Chancellor, but the aged von Hindenburg remained the nominal President until his death in August 1934. Hitler then united the Presidency with the Chancellorship, taking the title of Fuhrer. By this time, the Nazi Party was declared the only legal political party in Germany. James Hertzog, who has countersigned this document, maintained an anti-British stance throughout his career; he advocated neutrality against Germany in 1939 and was forced out of office at the beginning of the war.
