Description:

Deutsche Rotes Kreuz (German Red Cross) hewer, 10 1/4" x 15 1/2", featuring a black checkered Bakelite grip on the obverse, and a smooth grip on the reverse, these held by the original fixing screws, now well oxidized. The finish on the pommel, crossguard and the Red Cross emblem is good to very good with only some minor oxidation overall with no resultant pitting. The reverse ricasso of the blade is marked "Ges. Geschutzt" behind the crossguard extension. The blade is generally bright overall, with scattered patches of black oxidation along the length and a minute patch of active rust at the edge of the ricasso. The reverse of the blade shows some light run marks from the scabbard. This scabbard is constructed of black-painted steel with an aluminum drag and throat, and shows notable dings to the paint with resultant oxidation overall, but with no apparent dents. The scabbard is also fitted with a correct brown leather frog, marked "B" on the verso, and showing moderate wear. A well-traveled example that would still display nicely.
