Description:

(1831 - 1881) Twentieth President of the United States, Union army major general, assassinated while in office. A.L.S. on ornate 40th Congress letterhead, 2pp. 8vo., Washington, Dec. 20, 1867, to John Russell Young, Managing Editor of the 'New York Tribune'. In part: '...You will remember that I spoke to you of my friend Rhodes in connection with possible work in the Tribune...I enclose a couple of his letters. I need not say that I want you to think of him only as related to the good of the Tribune...' Accompanied by a second letter written by Henry E. Rhodes of the U.S. Navy, the same man mentioned by Garfield in the letter. In part: ‘...This letter was given to me by John Russell Young...in January, 1899. Mr. Young was on the editorial staff of ‘The New York Tribune' from 1865 to 1869, and for a period was managing editor...In 1880 General James A. Garfield was elected President of the United States and was assassinated...He was elected member of Ohio State Senate in 1859...1861 was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel of Volunteers, being promoted for bravery on the field up to Major General...My acquaintance with him resulted in my detail to the Corvette Iroquois...he thought the vessel was going to Europe hence his letter to Young...' Both letters are framed in a 14 x 23 in. wooden frame with black trim. Two pieces, fine condition.

International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight.
