Description:

Great document bearing the signatures of three prominent Confederates, an A.E.S. on the verso of a war-date request for transportation in relation to the 18th Alabama Infantry, 1p. oblong 8vo., [n.p.], Dec. 2, 1863. Approved on the verso by JAMES T. STEWART (1821-1908) Confederate major general who commanded at Shiloh, Chickamauga and Atlanta, and replaced Polk after that general's death; and HENRY D. CLAYTON (1827 - 1889) Confederate major general who led the Alabama Brigade at Chickamauga and Dalton, later assumed command of A.P. Hill's division and surrendered with Johnston in the Carolinas. Badly soiled and bearing holes and tears which have been repaired with tape. Fortunately, the signatures remain visible, though Holtzclaw's is faded.
