Description:

JEROME PETION DE VILLENEUVE
(1756-1794) French Revolutionary politician and second Mayor of Paris who replaced Bailly after his resignation. He joined the Girodins and, with 27 others, was expelled from the Convention in a Montagnard coup and subsequently persecuted. Petion escaped to Saint-Émilion, where he chose suicide over the executioner's guillotine. Partly-printed manuscript L.S. ‘Petion' as Mayor of Paris, 1p. legal folio, Paris, Sept. 6, 1792, to a commandant general regarding arming a prison, penned on the final day of the notorious September Massacres – mass killings of prisoners – taking place in Paris. In part: ‘…I asked you to establish there a number of men so imposing, that no one will be tempted to continue with excesses that we must deplore. You have not responded, I do not know if you are satisfied by my requisition, but I reiterate it this morning. I have to report to the National Assembly, I don't know what I can tell it about the state of the prison…'. From September 2 through 6, 1792, over 1,200 prisoners were murdered in a collective Revolutionary fervor. Very good condition, and worthy of further research.
