Description:

K.I.A. BLACK SOLDIER'S 'REMEMBRANCE' POSTER
Scarce poster issued in remembrance of a black American soldier killed in action, 10 x 15.75 in color, printed by H. F. Wendell in Leipsic, Ohio in 1918. The specially printed poster honors Pvt. James W. Underwood (1890-1918) whose oval portrait in uniform is affixed at the bottom. Underwood was a member of Co. B, 370th Infantry, and died of wounds received on Nov. 9, 1918. The poster additionally depicts (white) men charging enemy trenches, operating coastal artillery, aerial dogfights, etc. Marginal soiling and a tear, and a crease slightly intruding on the images, else very good. The 370th was known as the 'Black Devils', for their fierce fighting and was a segregated unit, it was the only United States Army combat unit with African-American officers. Underwood was killed two days before the armistice.
