LEE-ENFIELD NO. 1 MK III RIFLE WITH BAYONET, SLING, AND COVER
1915 Lee-Enfield No. 1 MK III rifle, bolt action, magazine fed repeating rifle, the main firearm used by British troops for the first half of the 20th Century, used from 1895 to 1957. This World War I version, known as the SMLE, is in very good condition, marked on the right side of the frame strap with a crown and 'G.R. BSA CO.', also '1915 SHT. LE III.' All exposed parts have matching serial numbers and various inspection stamps on many pieces. Stock bears dings and scratches, finish appears to be original with eight cartouches or inspection stamps. No rust, bluing at about 90%. Brass butt plate with a trap door contains the brass oiler. Original period leather sling present. Green canvas protective cover included, with brass snaps and grommets, marked with a broad arrow followed by: 'M.E. CO.' and what appears to be '1914' and boldly ink-stamped: '2 SQDN R.F.C. 9'. Proper period bayonet is also present, a Model 1907 Remington manufactured in June, 1915, 21.5 in. long overall, wood grip and painted fittings very good, the blade excellent although it has been sharpened, almost certainly by its soldier owner. Bears four inspection stamps, including a crown and broad arrow. Leather-covered scabbard is very good, the leather is scuffed but not torn, the brown leather frog is in very good to fine condition. Overall a very good to fine ensemble.
