LYNDON B. JOHNSON
(1908-1973) Thirty-sixth President of the United States and creator of the 'Great Society' social welfare programs. America's growing involvement in Vietnam led to his declining a renomination as president. T.L.S. 'Lyndon' on Senate 'Office of the Democratic Leader' letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Washington, Aug. 20, 1956 to Robert F. Six, president of Continental Airlines and husband of 'Honeymooners' actress Audrey Meadows. In part: '...This is just a note to thank you for your very fine help and cooperation. You did many things for us in Chicago and I am grateful for all of them. I will tell you again how appreciative I am the first time I see you...' Docketed at top, very good. Johnson refers to the 1956 Democratic Convention which selected former Governor Adlai Stevenson of Illinois for president and Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee for vice president. SOLD WITH: an invitation and pass to the White House issued to Six for a dinner on March 7, 1973.
