Description:

LYSANDER CUTLER (1807 - 1866) Union brigadier general, commanded the Iron Brigade at Fredericksburg, heavily engaged on the first day at Gettysburg, and severely wounded in the face at Globe Tavern. War-date A.L.S., 2pp. 8vo., "Head Quarters 1 Div. 1 AC", Dec. 7, 1863 to New York Gov. Horatio Seymour. In part: "...I have had the honor...requesting the promotion of Maj. Pye to the colonelcy of the 95th NY Vols....I made the recommendation because I thought, and still think, the best interests of the services would be forwarded...He has been in command of the Regt since last July for most of the time. It has been filled up by conscripts. He has drilled and disciplined them..." Fine. EDWARD PYE (1824-1864) received his promotion, made effective Oct. 9, 1863. Leading the 95th NY ("Warren Rifles"), he would be mortally wounded at Cold Harbor on June 2, 1864.
