Description:

A pair of undoubtedly unique photographs, found among a large group of other images credited to photographer John C. H. Grabill. One image, 7 1/4" x 4 1/4", shows seven white men seated at and standing beside a table, about half in military uniform. To their left and right, a number of Indians are seated upon the ground and in chairs, obviously participating in the proceedings. A second 7" x 4 1/4" photo, clearly related, shows eight Indians standing before the same wood structure shown in the previous image. Two of the Indians are wearing spectacles. The first photo has numbers inked above some of those present, but no key is present. We suspect that these photos may have portrayed part of the peace talks arranged by Gen. Nelson A. Miles who arrived at Pine Ridge only days after the Wounded Knee Massacre. Worthy of research! JOHN C. H. GRABILL (1849-1903) was a prominent western photographer most remembered for his important images of the early Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, the Sioux Indians, and the aftermath of the Wounded Knee Massacre.
