Description:

RELIGIOUS MEDAL AND RELICS RECOVERED AT GETTYSBURG
A fine grouping of "dug" relics recovered from the field at Gettysburg, including a religious medal, four general service U.S. buttons, and remnants of what may be a knife. The buttons all have shanks and are in relic condition with legible backmarks. The religious medal bears has images of Christ on both sides, one side showing Him carrying a cross, with a bust view on verso. The last item is a crudely hand-made tool resembling cleaver with a tang that probably attached to a wooden handle. With the group is a modern hand-printed ink note: "Battlefield objects found by the owner of this collection and received by him from friends. Note buttons, knife remnants, protective medal, and trigger guard". The trigger guard is no longer with the group. This fine relic is from the famous collection of J. Howard Wert, one of the "Big Six" collections of Gettysburg relics. We believe the note with this collection to be in Wert's hand. With a fuller description of Wert and his collection.
