Description:

SILAS S. SOULE
(1838- 1865) Abolitionist, Kansas Territory Jayhawker, and a soldier in the Colorado infantry and cavalry during the American Civil War. As commander of Co. D, 1st Colorado Cavalry, was present at the Sand Creek Massacre on Nov. 29, 1864. He refused an order of his commander, Col. John Chivington, to fire on defenseless Indians, primarily old men, women, and young children. Soule was gunned down on the streets of Denver in April 1865 after providing damning testimony against Chivington to both congressional and military investigations. Excessively rare, fine content D.S. as AAAG on "Headquarters District of Colorado" letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Denver, Mar. 23, 1863, transmitting Special Order No. 71 "By order of Col. Jno. M. Chivington" to Capt. J. C. Davidson instructing him to instructs him to "...scout the country on either side of the Arkansas River...pursue and exterminate a Partisan or guerilla band...arrest all Persons who give aid in any way to this Band...". Some cello tape repairs on recto and verso to a split , else very good. War-date documents from Colorado are virtually non-existent, especially so when signed by a soldier of such rarity!
