Description:
SLAVE MIDDLE PASSAGE DOUBLE SHACKLE LEG RESTRAINT A chilling relic from the trans-Atlantic slave trade, an iron bar bearing four horseshoe-shaped ankle restraints attached thereto, a set of two larger than the other two, with a ring at the far end of the bar permitting the restraints to be locked to the bar. Overall length 21 1/2". Due to the differing size of the restraints, we're forced to surmise that this set was intended for restraining an adult and child. This design is typical of restraints used on slave vessels, and is absolutely not of any type used in law enforcement. With museum de-accession letter of provenance.
